Professional Institute Launches Charitable Foundation

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 18, 2010) - The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, a national union representing 57,000 professionals and scientists in the public sector, will launch a new registered charity to support the education of deserving children across Canada.

Time and Date: 5 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010

Location: Théâtre, Casino du Lac-Leamy, 1 boulevard du Casino, Gatineau

In creating the Legacy Foundation, the Institute is bringing together under one roof two valuable member and community outreach initiatives, our scholarship program and our charity golf tournament. Through the combination of these two initiatives, the Institute has generated over a half million dollars for young Canadians.

"On the occasion of our 90th anniversary, the Institute continues its legacy of giving : $507,000 and counting," commented Institute President Gary Corbett. "We could not have done it without the support of our members and sponsors," said Gary Corbett.

In 2010, 35 scholarships totalling $81,500 will be awarded to deserving students.

The Institute's tradition of awarding scholarships began in 1999 with a generous endowment by Institute members to form a scholarship fund. The scholarship program was created to assist students with educational expenses on the one hand, and on the other, to promote the Institute as an organization committed to the advancement of education. In 2002 the inaugural PIPSC Open charity golf tournament was held.
