Prominent NUS members back Jon Cruddas for Deputy Leader

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 07, 2007) - Prominent education activists have signed a letter backing Jon Cruddas for Deputy Leader.

The list includes Gemma Tumelty, NUS President, who has lent her personal support to Jon, and Fiona Millar, the education expert. They joined by Labour Student officers from University Labour Clubs up and down the country.

On the day that the NUS publish a list of questions and answers from all the Deputy Leadership candidates, the 38 signatories have issued an open letter which says:

"We believe that, for current and future students, Jon Cruddas is the candidate who really understands the damage the current education funding system is doing to widening access, retention rates and to educational opportunity. He is the only candidate that voted against top-up fees and has stated very clearly that to at least keep the GBP 3000 cap on fees is vital for the future of higher education.

"Jon Cruddas also clearly supports NUS' demands on student loan repayments and is unequivocal on the need to keep repayments linked to inflation, rather than imposing the commercial interest rates proposed by others. This would have a huge effect on those graduates on lower incomes, including teachers, social workers and nurses.

"Jon was heavily involved in pushing through the national minimum wage and has frequently stated that students need more protection at work. He is the only deputy leadership candidate who supported a recent private members bill on temporary and agency workers, of which students make up a large number, and has shown admirable support for living wage campaigns on campuses.

"Jon Cruddas truly understands the need to remove barriers to education and social mobility. Having Jon at the cabinet table fighting our corner as the review of the current funding system takes shape would give us confidence that the lifting of the tuition fee cap is not already a "done deal". He would transmit the views of grass roots members to the Government, rather than seeking to sell them regressive and unpopular policies. Jon will listen to and represent us."

Jon Cruddas opposed tuition fees and voted against their introduction. He has criticised the government's obsession with education structures rather than raising standards across the board. He has also called for an end to testing for 7, 11 and 14 year olds.

Jon wants greater accountability in education with the devolution of greater powers to local communities and more parental involvement.

Jon Cruddas is MP for Dagenham. Jon is standing as a candidate for deputy leader of the Labour Party. For more information on Jon Cruddas' deputy leadership campaign visit www.joncruddas.org.uk
