Protana Chooses IBM and TurboWorx Solution to Accelerate Drug Research for Treatment of Disease

Help Scientists Reduce Data Processing Time by Ninety Percent

TORONTO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 5, 2005 -- Protana Inc., a Toronto-based genomic, protein analysis and drug discovery services provider, recognized as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum, today announced that it chose IBM and TurboWorx's joint data management, integration and analysis solution. The new solution has improved the task of data procurement and analysis by nearly 100 percent and reduced the time taken to analyze data from heterogeneous applications by 90 percent.

TurboWorx and IBM provided Protana with a technology solution that automatically distributes complex data across its different computing environments, enabling its scientists to access critical research information on demand. As a result, Protana has reduced data analysis time by 90 percent. With the new gains in productivity and efficiency, Protana can now redirect its resources toward research and spend less time in integrating data and dealing with programming issues, trying to access data from different systems. The manual data analysis that once took several weeks can now be completed within minutes.

Protana needed a workflow solution that would automate data transfer between applications. Its workflow productivity was limited -- some employees worked overnight to manually transfer research data from siloed technology systems. Transferring data files between servers and applications in Protana's multi-vendor computing environment was time consuming, cost intensive and prone to error. The company recognized the need for a solution that would enable data to move instantly and automatically from one module to the next in the research process.

"With IBM and TurboWorx's on demand technology solution, the overall throughput of our analytical data processing platform has improved nearly 100 percent, said Shane Climie, senior vice president, Science Strategy and Business Development, Protana. "Thanks to IBM and TurboWorx, our staff can now focus on core business activities instead of being weighed down with IT tasks. We are excelling in a highly complex marketplace and have become more efficient and saved money by streamlining processes. The open-standards based solution also best matched our needs as it enabled easy integration of data from different technology systems."

With the continued focus on research for developing new drugs, the volume of data that scientists must capture, analyze and manage is expanding. This data often resides in multiple applications and across different computing environments, which makes it more challenging and time consuming for scientists to effectively interpret and analyze the information.

"Our partnership with IBM has allowed us to increase our solution's portfolio," said Srini Chari, vice president and general manager, solutions, TurboWorx, Inc. Increased visibility for our solutions, a wider access to IBM marketing and sales resources, and strong developer relations between us have forged a union that will continue to grow and benefit our mutual customers with on demand solutions in the life sciences industry."

The workflow solution is comprised of TurboWorx Enterprise, supported by IBM DB2 Universal Database, WebSphere Application Server, Tivoli Storage Manager and IBM eServer xSeries.
