Puppet Labs Closes Series B Funding

Led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Additional Funding to Accelerate Growth of Puppet in Enterprise Markets

PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwire - July 19, 2010) -  OSCON -- Puppet Labs, the leader in data center automation, today announced that it has secured a $5 million Series B venture capital funding round led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, bringing its total funding to date to more than $7 million. Kevin Compton of Radar Partners has joined Puppet Labs' Board of Directors. Existing investors True Ventures and Radar Partners, which participated in the Series A round, also contributed to this round.

With investments in Amazon, Genentech, Google and Sun and enterprise software companies like Tivoli Systems, XenSource, Verisign and Citrix, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers brings a hugely successful track record and wealth of expertise to Puppet Labs. Puppet Labs plans to use this funding to drive the company's growth by building out its engineering team.

"Puppet is backed by a large community and thousands of users. Sys admins everywhere know and love Puppet because it makes their life easier," said Kevin Compton, Partner at Radar Partners. "Puppet Labs is uniquely positioned in the market and has a tremendous opportunity because it's going up against legacy systems or manual, do-it-yourself processes that have to be written from scratch for each system, every time. Puppet is a platform to automate that entire procedure."

Puppet is an open source data center automation and configuration management framework that provides system administrators with a simplified platform that allows for consistent, transparent, and flexible systems management. Puppet Labs' mission is to make it easier to manage servers. Most available solutions rely on scripts, built manually from scratch, and have no reusability or portability. Puppet automates this process to accelerate deployment and improve consistency of data center resources.

"We're thrilled to be backing Puppet Labs. They have an exciting team and product addressing a major pain point in all data centers of the future," said Matt Murphy, Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. "As data centers have moved from large consolidated systems to small distributed systems and cloud architectures, the ability to scale quickly and consistently has become an enormous problem for enterprises. Puppet has a passionate user base and is well positioned to be the leader in the huge opportunity in data center automation and systems management."

"Systems management is still a roadblock for many organizations. As data centers grow, configuring physical and virtual servers becomes a barrier to consistency and scalability," said Puneet Agarwal, Partner at True Ventures. "We're very pleased with the progress and momentum Puppet Labs has demonstrated since the Series A round and are excited to expand our investment in their success."

"Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers' track record investing in hugely successful technology companies speaks for itself," said Luke Kanies, CEO of Puppet Labs. "We're thrilled that along with True Ventures and Radar Partners, they see it's crucial for enterprises to automate their datacenters in a reusable way. The expansion of our board to include Kevin Compton and his expertise with enterprise software will be invaluable as we execute on our plans for growth."

Puppet Labs today also announced the release of Puppet 2.6, a major upgrade to the Puppet platform, with a focus on improvements for enterprise environments.
