Q4 Web Systems (Q4), a leading provider of software for corporate and investor relations websites, today reported the findings from their Q3 report which explores the use of Twitter for Investor Relations (IR) by public companies, with a particular focus on how they use it for their quarterly earnings. With respect to IR, Twitter provides the ability for companies to directly communicate, interact and build relationships with their stakeholders. The Q3 research builds upon their Q2 report which was issued in August of this year and reveals a 175% increase in the adoption of public companies that are using Twitter for Investor Relations. The complete report is available to download here.

"Since issuing our Q2 report in August, the growth in the number of public companies who have a Twitter account grew by 270 or 338%", said Darrell Heaps, Co-Founder and CEO of Q4 Web Systems. "This coupled with the 175% increase or 77 new companies who are using Twitter for IR since our last report indicates that IROs are realizing that social networks are an effective medium to reach out and interact with stakeholders."

The findings from this study show that companies in the technology sector still have the highest percentage of adopters at 29%. This group is closely followed by those companies in the service and pharmaceutical sectors. We are also seeing a lot of adoption by companies in the industrial goods and natural resource sectors. Interestingly, the ratio of those who actively engage with their followers - meaning they are interacting with people by answering their questions and genuinely having a two-way conversation vs. those who are using Twitter strictly as a broadcast channel remains unchanged from the Q2 report at 48% and 52% respectively.

Of the companies reviewed in the report we also found:

- 35% are using Twitter for investor relations.

- 68% of the companies who use Twitter for IR are located in the U.S.

- 53% provided a link to their earnings release only.

- 48% are actively engaging with their followers through @replies and retweets.

- 3% live tweeted their earnings call.

"Social media is here to stay and sophisticated investors and the financial media are increasingly using the web and social networks to find and share information about public companies", Heaps continued. "IR professionals need to use the tools that are being adopted by these key stakeholders as they allow direct interaction with current and potential shareholders and provide an avenue to establish a voice of authority over what is being said about your company."
