RONA inc. (TSX:RON), the largest Canadian distributor and retailer of hardware, home renovation and gardening products, opened the doors today to its new store in Aurora, Ontario. The opening is RONA's third store opening in three weeks, with new locations having opened in Sherwood Park, Alberta and Welland, Ontario. Located at 140 First Commerce Drive, the Aurora store represents an investment of more than $14 million and provides 150 jobs in the community.

"Aurora is a dynamic town with a growing community and prosperous economy. These conditions are ideal for RONA's product and service offering," explained RONA Executive Vice-President of Store Operations, Pierre Dandoy. "The RONA Aurora store benefits from all the latest innovations in terms of specialized boutiques and services, including our Project Guide service as well as our installation services."

"The new 100,000-square-foot Aurora store fits perfectly into our unique business model, which allows us to meet the specific needs of all the different communities we serve, no matter what their size or location, with stores of different formats. We're very proud to finally offer this customized formula to customers from the York region and look forward to providing them with tailored service and expertise," said Dandoy.

The new location is equipped to serve the growing community of Aurora. Most of the staff come directly from the area and are familiar with the town and its needs, which includes new home construction, agriculture, commercial and industrial-business segments.

"The whole team is very enthusiastic about welcoming clients to an innovative store that features personalized service, a very well-planned layout to make finding products easier and quality products at competitive prices," said Aurora store manager Bill Sadler. "We will 'Do it right.' Our goal is to provide customers and contractors from the area with outstanding service while we help them complete all of their construction and home improvement projects."

Everything under one roof, including 100% FSC softwood lumber

At 100,000 square feet, the store features a 2,890-square-foot greenhouse, a 876-square-foot cut shop, a 15,400-square-foot drive through lumberyard and a 11,200-square-foot outdoor garden centre. The store has over 33,000 different types of building materials and finishing products as well as specialized boutiques that include paint, decorative accessories, kitchen and bathroom cabinets and fixtures, doors as well as windows, and flooring. The store also has departments for tools, hardware, plumbing, electrical, lighting fixtures and seasonal articles.

Unique in the home improvement sector, RONA boutiques are designed to support the renovation process and make it more efficient. They allow customers to find everything they need to complete a renovation project in one single area. With the same idea in mind, RONA Aurora now offers Project Guide services, a concept offering the help of knowledgeable, specially-trained staff who guide customers through the different stages of specific renovation projects. Meanwhile, RONA offers renovation and interior decoration concepts through its RONA by Design program, which includes affordable trendsetting project recipes that help consumers achieve their projects on their own, yet with professional design help.

RONA also wishes to offer products that are respectful of the environment. In addition to RONA ECO and eco-responsible products, RONA will exclusively offer softwood lumber from FSC certified forests to Aurora clients. RONA's policy is that softwood lumber sold at RONA is from certified forests. The Company places preference on FSC certification because it is the one that best responds to the Company's requirements with regard to relations with local communities and biodiversity conservation. Currently, wood from FSC certified forests is not widely available in Canada and RONA wants to make it easier for consumers to have access to such products The RONA Aurora store will be the sixth store in Canada and the fourth in Ontario to offer softwood lumber from FSC certified forests. Clients can buy wood from FSC certified forests in the following five other stores: Rosemère (Réno-Dépôt) and Mascouche, Quebec, both stores in London, Ontario, one in Barrie, Ontario.

Other specialized services available at the new Aurora location include installation, delivery, kitchen design, a cut shop and a separate counter for contractors.

Committed to the environment and sustainable construction practices

RONA Aurora has adopted several building components that will make the store environmentally sustainable, all of which are based on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria. The sustainable efforts include the use of a white energy efficient roofing system; energy efficient lighting and motion detectors for specific lighting controls; use of construction materials with high recycled content; water saving plumbing fixtures to lower water consumption; timers and controls to regulate air conditioning and heating throughout the day; and the use of low-emitting materials to improve air quality.

Wood from certified forests and locally-manufactured materials were also used in the construction of the store. Bike racks were installed to encourage employees to cycle or walk to work. Finally, the light fixtures on display in the store use low-consumption compact fluorescent bulbs rather than incandescent ones.

RONA supports the community

During the opening ceremony, the RONA Foundation presented a $5,000 donation to York Region Children's Aid Society. The donation will go directly toward supporting the organization's post-secondary education program, and reflects the RONA Foundation's mission to help youth believe in themselves and in their future – for their own benefit and for the good of their community.

Created in 1998, the RONA Foundation provides assistance for young people aged 12 to 30 by supporting local organizations and projects that fight school dropout rates and illiteracy or that offer training.
