Realistic Miniature Baby Sculptures Are Not Edible

Accidental Viral Marketing Gives Birth to Instant Success for Canadian Sculptor

Attention: Arts/Entertainment Editor, Assignment Editor, Lifestyle Editor, Photo Editor VANCOUVER, BC, FEATURE--(Marketwire - Nov. 19, 2008) - Camille Allen found herself quickly vaulted into worldwide acclaim by a bogus email that turned viral. Images of her tiny babies graced computer screens across the globe when a spam messenger stole images from Allen's website and claimed the sculptures were made of marzipan - a sweet almond paste used to make candies. Actually the babies are made of polymer clay.

"I knew something was up when I turned on my computer and there were thousands of emails waiting for me," she explains. "At first I was horrified that people thought the babies were edible. However, I am grateful for the resulting widespread exhibition of my sculptures." The email responsible continues to circulate today.

Usually selling her one-of-a-kind babies on Ebay, Allen noticed the average selling price rise by 500%. Since then, her babies have continued growing in popularity and price. Recently a 1.5 inch (4 cm) baby named Jaimie sold for $2,650.00 US dollars.

The dolls come to life in the artist's hands, sculpted using tiny dentist tools and toothpicks out of doll making clay. She applies hair and paints. It is a time-consuming process, taking a week or more to complete one baby.

Allen was born in Vancouver and now lives nearby in Powell River on BC's Sunshine Coast. She began sculpting lifesize baby dolls at 20 years old in 2001 under the tutelage of her husband's grandmother, also a doll maker. However, she soon realized miniatures were her true love.

Camille Allen's unique pieces have been exhibited in art shows in New York, on the Montel Williams TV talk show and in the latest Ripley's Believe it or Not! book. Her originals have sold for over $3,000.00 (US dollars) at auction, though some reproductions are available for $99 at
