Recommendations of Oil Sands Consultation Group accepted

Calgary, Alberta (May 18, 2006) — Recently, the Government of Alberta announced it has accepted all nine recommendations of the Oil Sands Consultation Group, chaired by Mel Knight, MLA for Grande Prairie-Smoky. Suncor Energy's Gord Lambert, vice president, Sustainable Development served on the four-person group as the oil sands industry representative.

Formed in January 2006, the group's mandate was to establish a process that allows Albertans to share their vision and principles for development of Alberta's oil sands.

One key recommendation is to strengthen collaboration and openness of public consultations on oil sands development. This includes establishing a multi-stakeholder committee accountable for the overall consultation process, and a panel to collect public input, especially in the areas of Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo, Peace River, Athabasca and Cold Lake.

"Participating in this advisory group has been worthwhile, not only because it furthers Suncor's commitment to working with stakeholders to promote sustainable energy development, but because it allowed me to contribute to shaping Alberta's future for generations to come," said Lambert.

The Oil Sands Consultation Group's report and final recommendations are available online at under "what's new".
