Reminder: Spokeman Tour for Childhood Cancer

Gives Voice To BC’s Cancer-fighting Kids

Attention: Assignment Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor, Sports Editor MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - June 4, 2007) - Victoria/Vancouver -- Tim Harriman, 18, will bring his Spokeman Tour for Childhood Cancer to BC starting with Victoria on June 3, Vancouver on June 4 and at various points throughout the province along (see route details below).

The tour is a campaign to give a voice to the 10,000 cancer kids in Canada and to get September named Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Harriman is riding his bike from Victoria to St. John's Newfoundland and, along the way he is visiting as many cancer-fighting kids as he can. He is collecting their cards, mementos, works of art and messages about their experiences. His hope is to present these messages to the Prime Minister on behalf of all of Canada's cancer kids.

Harriman also hopes to raise at least $100,000 to give to the Childhood Cancer Foundation, the only national organization dedicated exclusively to fighting childhood cancer. He is one-thirds towards his goal and he hasn't even left yet.

When and where:

Victoria launch, Sunday June 3
Meet at 12:30PM at Days Inn Victoria on the Harbour 427 Belleville Street where Tim will finish readying his bike, packing up the RV etc. Everyone will proceed down to the beach at Ogden Point (in front of the Ogden Point Café & Dive Centre) for 1pm for brief remarks from Tim and others, including Mary Lye from the Childhood Cancer Foundation. Harriet Lye, now 20 and cancer free and from school in Halifax will represent the other side of the country and the end of the cancer journey, Taagan Benner, just over 1 and recently diagnosed as having a Wilms Tumour will represent the beginning of the journey. Harriman has two goals:

Kicking off his Spokeman Tour for Childhood Cancer in Victoria on Sunday June 3, Harriman, a Calgarian, will finish his ride in St. John's Newfoundland on Saturday August 25th. All told, Harriman's cross country trip will take a total of approximately 84 days, span 7738 kms, and will consist of an estimated 412 hrs of riding. Harriman will visit with as many cancer kids as possible including at a number of paediatric oncology centers and will also visit with non hospitalized cancer-fighting kids as he goes.
