Reminder: The Canadian Premiere of 'Fallen Angel and The Devil Concubine'

Presented by b current and Theatre Archipelago Attention: Arts/Entertainment Editor, Assignment Editor, Lifestyle Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(CCNMatthews - May 22, 2006) - Now celebrating it's 16th birthday, b current and one of Toronto's newest theatrical companies, Theatre Archipelago join forces for the Canadian premiere of Fallen Angel and the Devil Concubine. This venerable work from Jamaica's GroundWork Collective makes its way onto the Toronto artistic scene with a fresh adaptation after successful runs the USA and England!

Widely produced in varying countries in the Caribbean, Fallen Angel and the Devil Concubine illustrates one of contemporary dramatic works of the region, which deftly evokes the cultural and socio-political environment permeating the everyday lives of the populace in these island nations. Fallen Angel and the Devil Concubine crosses the cultural and regional divide in several ways, and shows that though the locale and place may be different, the issues that the homeless and poor face parallels greatly within our own communities. With this incredible story unraveling in the belly of Toronto's historic Parkdale neighborhood, this performance will ignite sparks of understanding, compassion and emotion.

"This is a timely and exciting venture for our companies", says artistic director, ahdri zhina mandiela. "Coming together for a production of a work we both admire and long to see in our houses. As well, this adaptation celebrates the breadth and strength of Caribbean roots within our midst; while looking to stimulate and galvanize the growing audience of theatre goers from the local communities."

Featuring Rhoma Spencer ('#6 theatre artist of 2005' by Now Magazine) and three time Dora nominee John Blackwood (The History of the Village of the Small Huts, CBC's 'At The Hotel' with Ken Finkleman, 'Missing' with Vivica A. Fox) and directed by ahdri zhina mandiela (stori ya, The Burglary, Two Can Play, Cast Iron, voted '#1 theatre artist of 2005' by Now Magazine), Fallen Angel and the Devil Concubine will boast set & costume design from Julia Tribe, lighting by Michelle Ramsay, sound by Nicholas Murray, and stage management by Andrea Schurman.
