Research skills are important in the elementary years

ETFO offers professional upgrading Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 7, 2005) - Learning how to do research is an essential component of learning how to learn. Practical approaches to teaching research skills, including internet research skills, will be the focus of a summer course offered by the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO).

The course is one of a wide range of professional development opportunities offered this summer by ETFO in partnership with its locals across the province. Courses are taught by ETFO members and designed to provide teachers with practical skills and resources to use in their classrooms. Hundreds of elementary teachers are expected to take part.

Available courses include a women's leadership institute, principals' qualifications program, training in delivering ETFO's body image curriculum, and credit courses.

What: Resuscitating Research

When: July 14,and 15

Where: ETFO, 480 University Avenue, Suite 1000, Toronto, Ontario

This course for classroom teachers and teacher-librarians takes participants through all the steps of conducting research, from picking a topic to sorting notes. It includes discussion of formats for bibliographies, helping students search effectively on the Internet, and maximizing research time.
