Retailing Today Issues Top 150 Annual Industry Report: The Scorecard of America's Trillion-Dollar Retailing Industry

Wal-Mart, The Home Depot, Kroger, Target and Costco Top the List

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - June 9, 2007) - The nation's leading retail publication Retailing Today released on Monday its Top 150 Annual Industry Report, a comprehensive overview of year-over-year sales, earnings and store count for the nation's largest retailers in the apparel, home, CE & entertainment, food and hardlines categories. The report, which is part of the June 4 issue of Retailing Today, chronicles the performance of the nation's leading retailers and includes: a listing of the top 150 retailers by sales volume (listed in ranking order with an alphabetical index); sales by channel; share of market by channel; and special coverage on the supercenter format.

For the seventeenth consecutive year, Wal-Mart Stores ranked first on the Top 150 list having reported $348.6 billion in sales in 2006, a figure that helped lead the universe of Top 150 chains to $1.62 trillion in sales, up 10.6% over the previous year.

"If you could bottle up fiscal '07 and put it in the archives, you'd have a picture of performance as solid as any in recent history," said Retailing Today editor in chief Tim Craig. "Despite an economy threatened by poor housing starts, an unstable energy market and a war in the Middle East, fiscal 2007 was another record-breaker, punctuated by mega mergers in the chain drug sector, meteoric growth from supercenters and another stellar year for U.S. retailers doing business abroad.

"Beyond the numbers came the issues, and last year didn't disappoint in this regard either. When retailing in China wasn't grabbing all the headlines, the pundits kept busy debating the fate of health care and sustainability -- all three of which will stay front and center with the impending presidential election campaign likely to dominate all rhetoric over the next 18 months."

The Top 150 retailers added 6,737 stores in 2006 to bring the total number of stores operated by these retailers to 161,132, despite lingering consumer concerns and the emergence of other issues that threatened to erode confidence. Overall, the increase in 2006 sales was broad based with 134 of the Top 150 retailers reporting a sales increase. Wal-Mart's growth alone accounted for roughly 24% of the $155 billion in revenue added by the Top 150 last year.

In addition to Wal-Mart's continued growth, other major retailers maintained their growth leading to a further concentration of sales among the industry's largest players. Growth from the likes of Target, Costco, a resurgent Kroger, an acquisitive Supervalu, chain drug operators, JCPenney and Kohl's, office products retailers and Federated Department Stores (now known as Macy's Inc.) resulted in roughly 75% of the more than $1.6 trillion in revenue generated by the Top 150 being concentrated among the 25 largest companies.

As this year's Annual Industry Report illustrates, supercenters have come to dominate the food sector of retailing. The top six supercenters included in Retailing Today's Annual Industry Report grew sales 17.4% to over $224 billion in 2006 and added 302 stores to reach a grand total of 2,828 supercenters across the U.S.
