Review of Ontario Energy Agencies welcomed by Energy Professionals

Society of Energy Professionals commends McGuinty Government for appointing panel to review province’s electricity agencies

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 29, 2007) - The Society of Energy Professionals, a trade union representing engineers and other professionals in the energy industry, would like to commend Ontario Energy Minister Dwight Duncan for appointing a four-person panel to conduct a review of the province's electricity agencies.

"A panel such as this is something the Society of Energy Professionals has been calling on for some time," says Andrew Müller, President of the Society of Energy Professionals. "By appointing this panel, the McGuinty Government is proving that it is working to ensure Ontario has an adequate supply of safe, affordable and reliable energy, and that those responsible for operating these entities are maintaining the best interests of the people of Ontario."

The panel will examine the costs associated with operating the four major agencies that succeeded Ontario Hydro and will review salaries for top executives. The panel will also address whether the energy industry is adequately recruiting and training enough skilled workers.

The multi-party panel led by James Arnett, a former chief executive officer of Molson Inc., will include Charles Harnick, a former Progressive Conservative attorney-general, David Cooke, a former NDP Minister of Education and Sharon Manson Singer, president of the Canadian Policy Research Network and a former vice-chairwoman of British Columbia Hydro.

"The Society of Energy Professionals looks forward to the panel's findings this spring and are ready to assist the review committee in their work in the strengthening of Ontario's energy sector," adds Mr. Müller.
