Rockwell Collins Selects InterSense Head Trackers for AVCATT Program

Contract Calls for Rockwell Collins to Upgrade All Fielded AVCATT Systems With SimEye SR100A HMD and Integrated IS-900 Head Tracking Sensors to Improve Display Imagery and Tracking Performance

BEDFORD, MA--(Marketwire - October 23, 2007) - InterSense, Inc., a market leader in precision motion technology, today announced that Rockwell Collins has selected the hybrid IS-900 inertial-acoustic helmet tracking system for the Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (AVCATT) Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) modification and upgrade program. Rockwell Collins was awarded the contract through the U.S. Army's Program Executive Office for Simulation Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) in August 2007.

The contract calls for Rockwell Collins to provide the program with the SimEye SR100A HMD, a more compact, lightweight, high-resolution upgrade for its SimEye XL100A, which is presently used in AVCATT. In order to provide a fully integrated solution to meet these requirements, Rockwell Collins has integrated the IS-900 MiniTrax sensor directly into the HMD. The new design not only reduces the weight on the pilot's helmet, but also decreases the calibration time required between the head tracker and the HMD display.

With InterSense's IS-900 system, the SimEye SR100A HMD offers a flexible and highly accurate tracking solution with no noticeable jitter or latency. Image alignment controls ensure that pilots obtain optimum display viewing and provide a 360 degree field-of-regard of out-the-window imagery of the virtual environment. Designed to support both virtual training and augmented operational reality, integration of InterSense's technology into the SimEye SR100A HMD optimizes the overall system performance and ensures the success of the visual displays for the AVCATT trainer.

"InterSense has supplied AVCATT with the IS-900 system since the program's inception in 2000, and its value in effective training has been reaffirmed by this selection. We look forward to working with Rockwell Collins in updating the program with the latest in motion tracking and display technology," said T.C. Browne, CEO of InterSense.

AVCATT is a mobile, transportable, virtual simulation training system designed to provide Army aviation with the capability to conduct realistic, high intensity training exercises and mission rehearsals. The system allows pilots to train and rehearse through networked simulation in a collective and combined arms simulated battlefield environment.
