Rod N. Barr, FCA, Appointed President and CEO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 10, 2009) - The governing Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario today announced that Rod N. Barr, FCA, has been selected as the Institute's new President and CEO.

"Rod Barr will provide outstanding leadership at the Institute," said Gerry Mills, FCA, the Institute's Chair. "Throughout his long career at Deloitte & Touche LLP, and his many volunteer contributions to the profession, including terms on our Council and in the role of its Chair, Rod has continually demonstrated a commitment to excellence and enhancing the reputation of the Chartered Accountant designation."

Barr had a distinguished career with Deloitte and Touche LLP, having held many varied positions with his firm in Toronto, Hamilton, New York, Vancouver, London and Wilton, Connecticut. From 1996 until his retirement in 2008, he was the firm's National Securities partner.

A Chartered Accountant since 1972, Rod was elected a Fellow of the Institute in 1988. He was a member of the Institute's Council from 1999 until 2006, and served as its Chair from 2004-2006.

Barr has also been active with the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants as a current member of its Board of Directors, and earlier as a member of the Securities Regulatory Advisory Group for the Rewrite of the CICA Handbook sections on securities related engagements, Chair of the Inter-provincial Education Committee and Chair of the Board of Examiners.

As the Institute's President and CEO, Barr said his priorities would include broadening a dialogue with the Government of Ontario on legal liability reform for auditors to enhance the province's competitiveness, advancing the evolution of the CA profession's structure to ensure it can meet the growing needs of the marketplace for financial services expertise, and assisting in Canada's progress toward the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

"I'm honoured to take on this role at a time of challenge and change for our profession," said Barr. "Above all, I look forward to ensuring that the CA designation continues as the gold standard for finance and accounting professionals in Ontario."
