Rooney Second Favourite To Win World Cup Golden Shoe

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - April 13, 2010) - Fabio Capello and all England supporters held their breath as Wayne Rooney hobbled off the pitch at the Allianz Arena two weeks ago and, for a while, England's World Cup hopes looked in tatters. However, it appears that Rooney's ankle injury is not as serious as first suspected and leading Irish bookmaker Paddy Power continues to rate the Manchester United striker at 10/1 joint second favourite to top score at this summer's World Cup.

Rooney's form for Manchester United has been superb this season with 34 goals in 41 appearances for his club side. He has also been the top scorer for England for the last two seasons, netting 11 goals since Fabio Capello's first match as England boss back in February 2008.

Paddy Power, the leading Irish bookmaker who offer a range of World Cup odds, said, "Rooney is arguably the world's most potent striker at the moment, and this is reflected in us installing the United hitman as second favourite to top score at the World Cup. With Spain as World Cup favourites, David Villa is the 9/1 favourite, but Rooney is considered as much a goal threat as Brazil's Luis Fabiano (at 10/1) and more likely than Fernando Torres who is a 12/1 chance."

Rooney's fitness will be key between now and the finals but, oddly, a two to three week break in April ahead of a gruelling World Cup could be exactly what the ex-Everton striker needs. It's worth remembering that Rooney hasn't scored at a major international tournament since 2004 when he helped England to the quarter finals of the European Championships.

Paddy Power added, "We've seen plenty of money for Rooney in our 'top goalscorer' World Cup Betting market, and punters genuinely believe he can emulate Gary Lineker's performance in 1986 by winning the Golden Shoe. He'll need England to perform well in the tournament, but with his form and quality there's no reason he can't be returning a nice profit for those who have backed him."
