Round-Table on Caregiver Issues Reveals Need for Local Support

Local Counselor Model Endorsed by All Participants

Attention: City Editor, Lifestyle Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ON, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - Aug. 24, 2009) - On August 20, 2009, the Canadian Caregivers Association (CCA) hosted a round-table on family and caregiver issues under the live-in caregiver program (LCP) in downtown Toronto. Teleconference guests included representatives from US firms who have placed tens of thousands of caregivers and others. Present were representatives from local groups, such as Intercede and The Family Resource Centre, as well as academics, and a wide variety of observers.

Discussion of labour failings in Ontario led to deliberation on the matter of importing the community counselor model used in the United States, which guarantees every caregiver access to a person who can mediate on their behalf, inform them of their rights, and provide shelter in the case of an emergency. Early discussion was back and forward but, by the event's conclusion, all were agreed that the counselor model would be a big improvement for caregivers working under the LCP in Ontario.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour finishes its public input phase of its research into future legislation around caregiver protections today, August 24, 2009, and the CCA hopes that it will expand its plans for the fall beyond a licensing regime - to better equip caregivers with the individual resources they need before problems occur, not after.

The CCA (www.cca-acaf.ca) stands ready to work with all levels of government and the community to help build the counselor system so many are now seeing as a huge opportunity to protect caregivers and the reputation of Ontario.
