Ruth Ridgeway Gives Key Tips on Entertaining During the Holiday Season

Celebrated Event Designer Shares Ideas on How to Host a Holiday Celebration in the Comfort of Your Own Home

STAMFORD, CT--(Marketwire - December 17, 2007) - Curious about what it takes to hold a successful, stress-free holiday party at home? Ruth Ridgeway of Ruth Ridgeway Designs ( is here to provide some pointers. Rule number one: Relax and enjoy the process... if you are relaxed, you guests will be too which means a good time for all!

Step One, Choose a Theme

First step, says Ruth, choose a theme. Be creative and visualize the décor ahead of time. Subtle and simple or dramatic and grandiose, themes simply determine an ambiance. Themes can be a blast with linens, candles and paper goods. Use what you have for decorations. Remember, the vivacity of a flourishing and successful party stays unaffected regardless of the chosen theme.

Says Ridgeway, "One of my favorite home parties of all times was a family pajama party. Everyone came dressed in pajamas and fuzzy slippers. We had a casual buffet dinner, watched movies, ate popcorn and played holiday songs."

Plan, Prepare, Order and Buy Well before the Event

When planning an event, it is imperative to prepare and organize accordingly. Be familiar with how many guests will be in attendance and, to be on the safe side, always be prepared for the unexpected: the unanticipated significant other in tow, or, perhaps, the inevitable guest that forgot to RSVP. Also be aware of your allotment of space. If you know only half of your guests will fit in the house, consider extending your space by tenting off a porch or deck. And be sure to reserve or buy (if you can) all essential provisions at least one week ahead of time. This includes rentals, paper goods, floral arrangements and any novelties that complement your theme.

Food and Drinks -- Get Help

After you have decided what type of event you want to host, be it formal or relaxed, and how many guests to invite, consider your options for food and beverage. Food-wise, determine if you want your venue to be catered completely, staff included. If not fully catered, consider catering from your favorite local restaurant or cooking yourself and hiring staff to serve. Many catering agencies now just provide staffing for events. Advocating the importance of being a guest at your own event, Ridgeway does not advise doing a large event solo-style unless, of course, you hold bionic superpowers or enjoy reveling in stress. As for beverages, hire a bartender for more than 30 people. If less than 30 guests are expected, consider setting up a convenient bar area; it is easier for both the host and attendees.

Many Options for Entertainment

Another facet of planning a hit celebration is deciding on entertainment. While live music is usually more exciting, a home stereo system can work just as well. However, if choosing live music, be sure to clear out an area for a DJ or band if necessary.

Get Ready, Here They Come

Anxious hosts and hostesses, the party day has arrived. Check off any final tasks and try to be ready at least an hour before your guests arrive. This still gives you enough time to tie off any loose strings and attend to any last minute details. Now, relax and take a deep breath because this is bound to be the event of the season. Enjoy it!
