SEIU Canada: Federal Budget Prolongs Jobs Crisis

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 4, 2010) - The Harper government has failed to deliver on its promise to use the budget to create jobs, according to the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the country's fastest growing union.

"Creating jobs is the best way to reduce the deficit," said Sharleen Stewart, the head of SEIU, which represents more than 100,000 employees in the service sector in Canada.

"Create jobs and the economy will come back. Instead, Harper is prolonging the jobs crisis. This budget has been used for corporate tax giveaways instead of investing in jobs," she added.

"With more than 800,000 people about to reach the end of their EI benefits, the true cost of this budget will soon become painfully evident," said Ms. Stewart.
