SEIU Canada: Union Launches Political Program

SEIU Canada Takes a Big Step to Create Big Change

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 15, 2009) - Services Employees International Union (SEIU) has announced today the start of a new political action program. The new campaign, called Member Action Program (MAP), is a way for union members to organize to make change happen on the political front.

SEIU has a long history of labour and political activism. We are not content to sit by while our requests for decent pay and safe work environments go unmet.

To help kick off the program, SEIU has invited guests from across the political spectrum to speak in Toronto Jun. 17, 2009, including:

- Washington State Rep. Tami Green, an expert in health care reform;

- Sharleen Stewart, Canadian International Vice- President, SEIU;

- Andrea Horwath, Leader, Ontario NDP; and

- Mario Silva, MP - Davenport.

MAP will be made up of SEIU members from across Canada. They will use the program to identify issues, mount campaigns and speak with politicians. SEIU wants to ensure that this is a grassroots campaign directed by our members.

Member Action will focus on the priorities of the members. Such as: raising the minimum wage, fixing the broken home care system, adequate funding for health care, and fairness and a decent wage for workers in the cleaning sector.

The program will make sure these and other issues will be on the agendas of politicians at election time and every day in between.

MAP will help get members politically involved - by giving member activists the tools to lobby for change.

"I am excited about the Member Action Program because I have seen programs like this work in the United States with the election of President Obama. Our members are thrilled about the future and so am I", said Sharleen Stewart, International Vice President of SEIU.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is the largest and fastest growing union in North America, with 100,000 workers in Canada and 2 million workers across North America.
