SEIU Congratulates Sid Ryan, President Elect of the Ontario Federation of Labour

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 26, 2009) - Sharleen Stewart, International Vice President of SEIU Canada wishes to extend, on behalf of SEIU members across Ontario, her heartfelt congratulations to brother Sid Ryan who was unanimously elected president of the Ontario Federation of Labour yesterday. Brother Ryan replaces outgoing president brother Wayne Samuelson, who after 12 years of hard and committed work chose not to seek re-election.

Ryan pledged to focus on a new economy, labour unity and social solidarity for labour unions across Ontario. He promised to:

- develop a progressive strategy for the new economy

- build a strong and united labour front

- convene a Social Solidarity Roundtable and develop key public policy studies on issues such as social housing, public child care, free post- secondary education and the expansion of community/union health clinics

His key message which, struck our members is union solidarity. This is not lost on SEIU or any of the unions represented at the OFL convention.

To underscore his commitment to action, not just words, Brother Ryan chose as his first official act to join cleaners and SEIU Local 2 campaigners on the picket line as part of the Justice For Janitors campaign. The rally was a success and more so that we had our OFL President on the line with low paid workers.

Ryan served as president of CUPE Ontario for 17 years.
