Total Unique Visitors to the Bay Area's Most-Visited Local News Site Increases 15% Year-Over-Year

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - October 26, 2009) - For the second consecutive month,, the online home of the San Francisco Chronicle, recorded an all-time high for page views. According to Omniture Site Catalyst, had nearly 125 million page views in September 2009, an increase of 36% compared to September 2008. The number of unique visitors grew to 12.1 million, a 15% increase year-over-year.

September's record-breaking traffic follows similar growth in August, when page views reached just over 112 million and unique visitors totaled 11.8 million.

September traffic was influenced by local news and events, such as the closure and construction of the Bay Bridge over Labor Day Weekend, the annual Burning Man and Outside Lands festivals, opening of the San Francisco Opera and Symphony seasons and the Folsom Street Fair. The improved treatment of the site's photo galleries continued to prove popular around each of these events, with traffic up overall to the galleries by 143% year-over-year.

Record traffic was also seen with the site's blogs, which saw an 118% increase in year-over-year traffic. This included strong traffic to several of its top blogs, such as Politics, City Insider, and the Crime Scene. The site also introduced several new blogs in September, including ChronRX, dedicated to health and wellness in the Bay Area, and Get To Work, a blog dedicated to the local job market and tips on job hunting. The site's Sports section also saw record traffic in September, helped in part by the fast start to the season for the San Francisco 49ers and the Giants' late-season run to a possible playoff berth.

New features launched in September included two new neighborhood sites dedicated to local news and events: Peninsula Coastside and In Noe Valley. The addition of these two new sites brings the total number of neighborhood sites on to six. The site's Style section also saw many improvements: an expanded collection of stories, photo galleries and videos; its SF Unzipped blog; fashion listings and more.
