SIU Appeals for Witnesses to Sudbury Incident

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 21, 2010) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to an interaction that occurred at a bush party on April 16, 2010. 

On this date, in the evening hours, an interaction took place between Greater Sudbury Police Service officers and a 19-year-old man on a steep hill at the rear of St. Andrew Catholic School. The man sustained injuries. As a result, the SIU commenced an investigation.

The Lead Investigator is interested in speaking with any member of the public who may have witnessed this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or the Lead Investigator at 416-622-1935. 

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
