SIU Investigates Motor Vehicle Collision in Oshawa

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 24, 2010) - Six investigators and three forensic investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision in Oshawa that occurred this afternoon.

The SIU was notified that at approximately 2:17 p.m. on March 24, 2010, a motorcycle being driven by a 31-year-old Oshawa man collided with another vehicle in the intersection of Harmony Road North and Adelaide Avenue East in Oshawa. The motorcyclist was taken to Lakeridge Health where he succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 3:03 p.m. The 50-year-old driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries. At the time of the collision, Durham Regional Police Service officers were conducting radar in the vicinity.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
