SIU Investigates Shooting in Belleville

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - June 13, 2005) - Four investigators and three forensic identification technicians from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding a shooting involving the Belleville Police Service (BPS).

The shooting occurred after police were called to a home on Ashley Street in regards to a man acting in a strange manner. BPS officers arrived and became involved in a confrontation with James Wood, 44 years of age, in the area of Mudcat Lane and Ashley Street. Mr. Woods sustained a gunshot injury to the abdomen area and is being treated in hospital. He is in serious condition.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
