Salisbury solution gets 'smart'

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN--(Marketwire - January 27, 2010) -

-- New, faster broadband will allow citizens of Salisbury, North Carolina to
get better voice, video and data in their homes
-- Ericsson will provide IPTV technology to power the city's Fiber to the
    Home (FTTH) Initiative

That initiative will ultimately make Salisbury a so-called "smart city," with new technologies and applications that help attract new businesses and create job opportunities, thus boosting the local economy. Local businesses and citizens will be empowered to participate in the global marketplace.

Michael Crowell, director of broadband services for the City of Salisbury, says: "After a thorough process, it is clear that Ericsson Federal provides the best technology, knowledge and complete IPTV solution to address our current and future communications needs. We look forward to immediately providing cost-effective video, voice and data services to the citizens of Salisbury."

Ericsson Federal (EFI) President and Chief Executive Officer Doug Smith says: "Ericsson's solution will place Salisbury ahead of the curve competitively. We believe this is just the beginning of how we'll see local governments leverage this type of technology to provide broadband services to their citizens and help drive local economic development."

Ericsson's IPTV solutions are based on open standards, allowing advanced communications applications to be deployed more quickly. IPTV also decreases the cost for introducing new features and applications, critical factors in a competitive environment.

The citizens of Salisbury will see a custom IPTV portal that is user-friendly and helps them easily adapt to the new services and solutions becoming available on the high-speed network.
