San Francisco Chronicle Kicks Off Season of Sharing

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - November 20, 2007) - The San Francisco Chronicle will celebrate the kickoff of this year's Season of Sharing campaign at the annual tree lighting ceremony at Ghirardelli Square on Friday, November 23, 2007. The family event is expected to attract upwards of 5000 people annually, and includes the lighting of a 35' holiday tree, carolers, crafts, and more.

The Chronicle will recognize the efforts of county coordinators, share prior success stories and offer a means through which people may donate, or learn how. Donations will support the Season of Sharing Fund in its year-round efforts to alleviate the hardships of individuals and families facing temporary setbacks.

The 21-year old Season of Sharing Fund has raised more than $56 million to ease the burdens of residents in nine Bay Area counties. The Fund is the single-largest monetary contributor to local food banks and contributed more than $762,000 during 2006-07. During this time the Fund also distributed more than $4 million to thousands of individuals who applied for critical family needs and housing assistance grants.

The Fund boasts a unique record of efficiency. One hundred percent of donations goes to Bay Area communities. Thanks to the commitment of the San Francisco Chronicle, the interest generated by the Fund and the support of the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, administrative costs, from auditing and banking to supplies and management, can be covered without being subtracted from donor contributions.

Every individual contribution to the San Francisco Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund -- from five dollars to $250,000 -- helps hard-working people put their lives back together after they've been struck by illness, the loss of a job or another unforeseen setback. By combining the generous support of many individuals, foundations and corporations, the San Francisco Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund continues to make a difference in the lives of the people who need it the most.

The San Francisco Chronicle is the Bay Area's leading news and information source and has been connecting the region with its award-winning journalism since its founding in 1865.
