San Francisco Chronicle, SFGate.com Named Best in State

Newspaper and Web Site Honored by California Newspaper Publishers Association

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - April 21, 2010) -  The San Francisco Chronicle was awarded the general excellence award by the California Newspaper Publishers Association in its annual journalism contest, beating out other newspapers across California for the honor. In addition, SFGate.com was named the state's best Web site by the organization.

The general excellence and best Web site awards are given to the newspaper judged to have done the best overall work during the course of the contest period.

Along with the general excellence award and best Web site, The Chronicle won 13 first-place awards in the contest, which judged work completed between April 2008 and October 2009. Recognition was awarded for editorial pages, lifestyle coverage, arts and entertainment coverage, sports coverage, front page and page design. Also recognized with first-place awards were Education reporters Jill Tucker and Nanette Asimov, Columnists C.W. Nevius, Police Reporter Jason Van Derbeken, Editorial Page Editor John Diaz and Photographer Paul Chinn.

"It's really a tremendous testament to the staff of The Chronicle," said Steve Proctor, managing editor. "All of us, including Ward Bushee, the editor, are extremely proud of how the staff has managed to produce quality journalism day-in and day-out."

The Chronicle also won five second-place awards in the competition that had nearly 4,000 entries from newspapers across the state. The competition had 28 different categories for newspapers divided into nine divisions based on circulation.
