Saskatchewan Marks Peacekeepers' Day with Federal Support

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Aug. 8, 2008) - Two ceremonies in northern Saskatchewan will commemorate the first National Peacekeepers' Day with Government of Canada support.

The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, and Member of Parliament for Battlefords-Lloydminster, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today a contribution to the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP) North Saskatchewan Chapter.

"This is the first year that Peacekeepers' Day is being commemorated nationally," said Minister Thompson. "I'm glad to see communities across Canada, such as Saskatoon and North Battleford, take up the call to honour the brave Canadians for their commitment to building both a strong and proud Canada and a better world."

"By serving in countries devastated by conflict, the men and women honoured on National Peacekeepers' Day helped shape Canada's international identity and protect our sovereignty," said Minister Ritz. "From this year forward, every August 9th the nation will pause to commemorate the contributions and sacrifices of peacekeepers' both past and present."

Funding of up to $800 was provided to CAVNUP through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support two commemorative ceremonies marking National Peacekeepers' Day on August 9, 2008. Veterans, CAVUNP members, serving Canadian Forces members, cadet organizations and the public are invited to attend a morning ceremony in Saskatoon and an evening ceremony in North Battleford. Lynne Yelich, Member of Parliament for Blackstrap, will attend the ceremony in Saskatoon.

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
