Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation: Saskatchewan Campaign Launched to Fight Multiple Sclerosis

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Jan. 27, 2010) - Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation, in partnership with the MS Society of Canada, has committed to raising $5 million to establish a multiple sclerosis clinical research chair in the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. In addition, the Foundation will also provide additional funding for Saskatchewan research regarding international claims of a major breakthrough in the treatment of MS. Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates of MS in the world.

The Honorary Chair for the campaign, Lynda Haverstock, former lieutenant-governor of Saskatchewan, points out that Saskatchewan is well-positioned to offer much-needed expertise in the research and treatment of multiple sclerosis. Peter MacKinnon, president of the University of Saskatchewan, agrees saying, "Community partners like Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation and the MS Society of Canada are providing opportunities that extend beyond our campus, enabling research to move from theory to practice more quickly, so that ultimately the people of Saskatchewan may benefit."

Randy Kershaw, CEO of the Foundation, stated, "The Foundation has a long and special relationship with MS treatment and research. The MS Clinic in Saskatoon and the Cameco MS Neuroscience Research Centre are both located at Saskatoon City Hospital. We believe this Campaign will be of major significance."

Information on the campaign is available at www.saskatooncityhospitalfoundation.com. As of February 1, 2010, a video of the news conference held on January 27, 2010 will also be available for viewing on the web site. The web site also accepts on-line donations.
