Scientific Atlanta's Switched Digital Video Platform Crosses 7 Million Committed Homes Passed Mark

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwire - November 19, 2007) - Scientific Atlanta, a Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) company, today announced that commitments for its Switched Digital Video (SDV) platform in the U.S. have exceeded 7 million homes passed. Scientific Atlanta's heritage in digital video has driven its success in the SDV arena, and this milestone shows that Scientific Atlanta's proven SDV architecture is truly open and confidently accepted in the industry. Today's announcement follows the company's introduction earlier this year of its breakthrough Universal Session and Resource Manager™ (USRM™) as a software upgrade to existing SDV servers in any network system.

By extending and distributing the management of the video and data network control plane all the way to the "edge" of the network (generally speaking, at the optical node), operators can maximize their network investment by sharing quadrature amplitude modulators (QAMs) across both video-on-demand (VoD) and switched digital video traffic.

"Scientific Atlanta's SDV solution provides our customers with increased service velocity, which is a top priority for them today," said Greg Hardy, vice president of Business Development, Scientific Atlanta. "Because our SDV product is one in a wide suite of our digital video products, it can get lost in the digital buzz relative to competing devices from single-product companies. We have gone beyond just switched video by including total edge-resource management for an increased return on investment. It's also important to know that our USRM supports switched digital video in any cable system with products from other manufacturers. It is truly open, and it supports existing applications while establishing a foundation for expansion of services in the future."

Scientific Atlanta's SDV platform offers the complete end-to-end SDV solution, while working in concert with existing network equipment and customer premise equipment. Additional unique elements to the Scientific Atlanta offering include:

-- Digital Content Manager -- Grooms and processes switched digital video
streams and also performs ad insertion, rate shaping and transcoding among
    different digital video formats
-- Netcrypt™ Bulk Encryptor -- Allows for independent scaling of
encryption and edge QAM resources and is connected to the Internet Protocol
    (IP) network over Ethernet
-- SDV Manager -- Features standard Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) Management Information Bases (MIBs) for the automated configuration
    of system components
-- SDV Server -- Tracks all channel change requests and viewership
patterns; is built on standards-based server hardware and operating systems
-- Session-Based QAM Modulators -- Supports IP-based multicast and
interoperability with standard IP switches and switch routers; these QAMs
interface with the master session resource manager (SRM) and SDV server
using open interfaces, and also enable QAM sharing between SDV and existing
    VOD services
-- SDV Client -- A software release that can be integrated via spin-down
into existing electronic program guides (EPGs)
-- Cisco® edge, routing and switching products -- Provides carrier-
class routing and offers integrated, high-density switching for a
    converged, maximized network
-- Support applications for capacity planning and viewership analysis --
Allows the operator to understand capacity utilization and viewership
patterns; easily configured thresholds provide operators with early
detection of capacity issues that can affect customers and help plan for
network expansions as switched channel usage increases
