Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life 2009: Building the Red Ribbon Highway

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 11, 2009) - Help us build a Red Ribbon Highway of hope for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS by participating in the 2009 Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life! The annual Walk in support of community programs and services for people living with HIV/AIDS will be held in communities across Canada from September 12 - 20.

In communities across Canada, Scotiabank has already been building the Red Ribbon Highway through fundraising efforts in their branches. We want to strengthen their lead and offer hope to the 62,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Canada, and to those affected. "When we just talk about HIV or wear the red ribbon, we're standing in solidarity with people living with and affected by HIV and providing them with hope," says Monique Doolittle-Romas, Executive Director of the Canadian AIDS Society. "But contributing to the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life means we are able to make tangible difference in their lives, by enabling us to provide the direct services that make their lives a little easier."

John Doig, Scotiabank Senior Vice-President, Canadian Marketing echoed those sentiments, adding. "As long as there is no cure for HIV and AIDS, people in our communities - women, youth, children and men, and their families -- face the challenges of this unforgiving disease every day. By coming together to raise awareness and funds, we can help shape a better future."

All funds raised from the Walk help community AIDS service organizations in Canada to provide prevention, education, treatment and support programs for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in their community.

"11 new infections of HIV daily is too many for any country. We need to work to address the root causes of HIV and that can be accomplished through creating awareness of the impact of HIV in our communities," says Gerry McConnery, Chair of the Canadian AIDS Society. "HIV exists across the country and we need to realize that Canadians are not immune."

Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life

The Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is a project of the Canadian AIDS Society in partnership with the British Columbia Persons with AIDS Society, the AIDS Committee of Toronto, and community-based AIDS organizations across Canada. During the national week-long event, cities and communities from across the country host Walks to raise funds for local services and programming and to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. As Canada's most important HIV/AIDS awareness and fundraising event, the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life has now raised close to $30 million for community-based HIV/AIDS service organizations since 1996 and has attracted well over half a million participants. Scotiabank has now been the Walk's title sponsor for two years and has played a key role in expanding its reach and fundraising capacity.
