Secretary of State Kenney to Participate in Ontario Black History Society's Kickoff to Black History Month

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 26, 2008) - The Honourable Jason Kenney, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity), will attend the Ontario Black History Society's kickoff event to launch Black History Month tomorrow in Toronto.

"The Government of Canada recognizes the many ways in which black cultures and traditions have contributed to the strength of our communities and our shared Canadian identity," said Secretary of State Kenney. "I encourage all Canadians to participate in Black History Month activities across the country. It is an excellent opportunity to learn about ourselves and especially about the contributions of Canadians of African descent to Canada."

The Ontario Black History Society is a non-profit organization, founded in 1978, that is dedicated to the study, preservation, and promotion of black history and heritage. The Ontario Black History Society was the catalyst for the formal declaration of February as Black History Month across Canada.

"The Ontario Black History Society is pleased to have the Honourable Jason Kenney attend the annual Ontario Black History Society kickoff to Black History Month," said Rosemary Sadlier, President of the Ontario Black History Society. "This is an occasion to thank the Government of Canada for the national declaration of February as Black History Month and for all the financial support provided through the federal Museums Assistance Program, which helped us to complete both a feasibility study and business plan for our proposed Centre of African-Canadian History and Culture."

The Government of Canada is committed to reaching out to all Canadians and is developing lasting relationships with ethnic and religious communities in Canada. It encourages these communities to participate fully in Canadian society by enhancing their level of economic, social, and cultural integration.
