Harnessing the social-media tools of the Internet age

More often associated with traditional postal service, Canada Post decided this summer to look beyond traditional advertising approaches and ask employees to become advocates of our products and services, using social media to share their videos. Employees created video commercials about one of four non-traditional services: smartmoves™ (a service to facilitate address changes), epost™ (online receipt and bill payments), Xpresspost™ (overnight delivery service) and Picture Postage™ (personalized stamps).

"No one knows Canada Post's products and services better than those who work hard to deliver them to Canadians," says Kathy Haley, Canada Post's Vice-President of Marketing. "This contest gave our people an opportunity to express their creativity, win a prize and show Canadians-including all of us here at Canada Post-just how well they understand and appreciate what we offer in terms of products, services and solutions to everyday delivery and communication needs."

The incredible response-120 submissions from employees in every business area across Canada-is reflective of an unmistakable trend at Canada Post to use all tools at its disposal, including social media, to better interact with consumers, partners and employees.

About the Super Fun Make a Commercial and Win an Awesome Prize Employee Video Contest

The entrant of the winning video will win a trip to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The contest was open to all Canada Post employees, and closed September 30, 2009. A panel of Canada Post marketing, communications and media employees selected the top 24 videos (12 English and 12 French) based on creativity, brand appeal, originality and factuality. Now, it's up to Canadians to decide the winner.

"We're very excited to see the response of Canadians to these videos because it will help to deepen our understanding of what our products and services mean to them," said Ms. Haley. "The contest has also shown us the incredible power social media have to bring our people together to connect with Canadians and, in the process, to share our brand messages in ways we'd never before thought possible."
