Seeing Is Believing

Visible Differences in Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ Varieties Backed by Post-Harvest Results

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 2, 2009) - With harvest of soybeans in Ontario and Quebec now complete, yield results are confirming what many growers saw during the growing season - that Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ soybeans are setting a new yield standard for soybeans in Canada.

"Over the course of the growing season, we received regular reports from the field of observations of more 3 and 4 bean pods associated with soybean varieties with the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology compared to the first generation Roundup Ready® technology," says Dr. Mark Lawton, Technology Development Lead for Monsanto in eastern Canada. "These kinds of observations confirmed what we knew to be true - that the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology is indeed different from the first generation Roundup Ready technology. But, what everyone was waiting to see was if these visual differences resulted in improved yields. Now we know that to be the case based on thousands of comparison that have been made in farmer's fields."

Lawton's comments are echoed by trait technology licensees of the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology, including Stephen Denys, Vice President Sales and Marketing with Pride Seeds. "We have definitely noticed differences between Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ soybean varieties and first generation Roundup Ready soybean varieties in our fields. The Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ plants are darker green and bushier and that structure is consistent with our observation of more 3-plus bean pods in the random counts and comparisons we did between plants with this new technology and others with the first generation technology."

From a performance perspective, Denys says he was pleasantly surprised with the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology. "With the first class of products with any new technology you don't expect to see a high win rate. Typically it takes a couple of years before you get the genetics, technology and agronomic conditions in sync to optimize the performance of varieties. But with this new technology, we've already seen some significant benefits in our fields, including an average 7.9% yield gain compared to varieties with the first generation Roundup Ready technology and a 80%+ win rate in head-to-head competitions between our Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ varieties and other varieties."

Lambton county grower Darren Munro of Munro Farms was able to get a first-hand look at the new Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology as part of the approximately 1500 acres of soybeans he grew in 2009. "More pod clusters near the top of the plant and more 4-bean pods through the whole plant were what stood out for me," he says. "I grew some Pride brand soybeans with the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology, side-by-side with some Roundup Ready varieties with which I had done quite well with previously. As soon as I hit the area with the new Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ variety with the combine, the yield monitor jumped by 5 bushels per acre instantly. It was that quick a change."

Monsanto's Lawton says the experiences of Denys and Munro are consistent with Monsanto's field scale and plot data that indicates that the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology is delivering a level of yield enhancement in a single technology innovation that has not been seen in soybeans. In 2010, he says growers can expect a wide selection of soybean varieties with the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology, with some 30-plus varieties approved for commercialization and availability through a number of leading seed brands.
