Signing of Major Keeyask Hydroelectric Project Deal

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 29, 2009) - The following statement was released by the Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians, on the signing of the Keeyask Hydroelectric project deal between four Manitoba First Nations and Manitoba Hydro:

"I want to congratulate Tataskweyak Cree Nation, York Factory, Fox Lake and War Lake First Nations for seizing this opportunity to help First Nation communities grow.

Partnerships like the one you have formed with Manitoba Hydro help ensure your members get the skills needed to take advantage of emerging employment opportunities in a variety of sectors.

I am also aware that Tataskweyak has just signed the terms of reference documents for its water and sewer project, part of our Government's National Water Action Plan, meaning even more benefits to communities.

The initiative you are undertaking today will mean a better future for First Nations communities, families and children. In addition, the private sector is recognizing the tremendous potential Aboriginal communities have to offer the Canadian economy.

This is good for First Nations, for Manitoba and for all Canadians. My most sincere congratulations to all involved in this worthy endeavour."
