Sitecore CMS Software Helps TransLink Build an Olympic Quality Website for the Vancouver Community

New Site Provides Community Hub for 2010 Winter Games and Beyond

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - April 12, 2010) - Sitecore, the leading provider of .NET Web Content Management System (CMS) software, today announced that TransLink, the regional transportation site for Vancouver, used Sitecore's Web CMS software to better serve the Vancouver community during the Winter Olympics 2010, when site traffic doubled to 60,000 visits per day as out of town visitors sought transportation to and from the Games.

TransLink worked with FCV Technologies (FCV) to implement a Sitecore driven site that is easy to update, accessible to the visually impaired and with new features that made navigating the Winter Games an intuitive experience. The new features include Google maps integration, trip planner and a real-time traffic update application that works on the site and via smart phones. In addition, TransLink worked with Tribal DDB Vancouver to create a front end which looked visually appealing and enabled users to find relevant information quickly.

TransLink has been able to do a more efficient job organizing content on the backend making it easier to manage, update and share with other systems. According to Kirsten Koppang Telford, eCommunications Consultant, TransLink, "We received much positive feedback during the Winter Games as a significant portion of Vancouver's population left their cars behind and took transit for the first time. The flexibility of Sitecore allowed us to easily expand the content on our site to address the specific needs of the Games' time travelers."

TransLink is Metro Vancouver's regional transportation authority, serving 22 municipalities. TransLink is the first North American transportation authority to be responsible for the planning, financing and managing of all public transit, in addition to major regional roads and bridges. They are responsible for regional transit, cycling and commuting options, as well as AirCare, Intelligent Transportation System Programs and the Major Road Network.

The website's main goal is to provide customer service information to the 2.5 million people in metro Vancouver, along with thousands of tourists visiting Vancouver for the Winter Olympics & Paralympics. The site was redesigned and built to be fully accessible, per the W3C (WAI Level 2). 

Since the new site went live, traffic has increased by approximately 20 percent to over 900,000 visits per month. The site has realized a 12 percent decrease in bounce rate, confirming visitors who arrive at the homepage easily find information they seek. Content that previously lived deeper in the site, such as transit maps and fares & passes, have received more than double the number of visits than the same period in 2008. The time spent on these single purpose pages has decreased by almost half, from 3:51 minutes to 1:55 minutes, indicating that the site is better optimized to the user experience and visitors are able to access the desired information faster, minimizing frustration and expediting their transit trip.

Since launch, TransLink has added a public consultation space, including blogs and forums, and launched subscription services to allow travelers to receive service notifications via email and SMS.
