Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - Feb. 23, 2010) - Media Availability

Who: Dr. Michael Ivanco, Vice President of the Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) will be available to the media for background and interviews. SPEA represents employees at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL).

What: Canadian Nuclear Association's 50th Annual Meeting

Where: Westin Hotel Ottawa

When: February 24 - 26, 2010

Why: The decision by the Harper Government to place AECL for sale may have a significant impact on the Canadian nuclear industry. Over 60,000 Canadians are employed in the nuclear industry and the potential loss of thousands of scientists, engineers and technologists would ripple through the economy. A potential firesale of Atomic Energy of Canada could have the same kind of ripple effect that the cancellation of the Avro Arrow had, as thousands of top engineers and scientists left the country; a brain drain that took decades to overcome. Canadian high tech firms and universities that graduate students would feel the impact of losing this technologically cutting edge expertise.

The Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) represents engineers, scientists, technologists and technicians who work for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). Members work in Quebec, New Brunswick and Ontario at Bruce Power and at Sheridan Park as well as on international projects. Collectively SPEA represent most of Canada's nuclear power reactor design expertise.
