SolarWinds Announces a New Virtual Management Free Tool -- VM Console

IT Professionals to Perform Real-Time Virtualization Management; Bounce and Track Virtual Machines Directly From the Desktop

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - August 25, 2010) -  SolarWinds® Inc. (NYSE: SWI), a leading provider of powerful and affordable IT management software to more than 95,000 customers worldwide, today announced the newest addition to its community-driven free tool offering, VM Console. VM Console joins VM Monitor as SolarWinds' second virtualization management free tool, and is designed to bounce (shutdown and restart) and track virtual machines (VM) from the convenience of a real-time, desktop dashboard.

In less time than it takes to request VMware® vCenter™ access or locate login credentials, IT professionals can bring a hung, frozen, or otherwise unresponsive virtual machine back to life. VM Console allows IT professionals to bounce VMs, track up/down status, take a snapshot to compare the VM before and after it's bounced, and restart VMs all without ever logging into vCenter or vSphere™. The latest free tool launches just in time for the VMworld 2010 conference in San Francisco where SolarWinds is hosting an expert panel, "Virtualization 101: Best Practices on How to Manage Storage and Virtualized Environments," at 10:30 a.m. PDT, August 30, in Moscone North Room 130.

"Keeping an eye on virtual machines has never been easier than with VM Console," said Josh Stephens, SolarWinds' Head Geek and VP of Technology. "Logging into Vcenter just to snapshot and bounce a VM is time consuming and awkward. The VM Console provides an easy-to-use desktop widget for these types of tasks."

In addition to the tool's bounce and track capabilities, users have built-in access to the additional 15 free tools, SolarWinds' online user community thwack, and a preview into Orion Network Performance Monitor (NPM), the flagship network performance and management product.

VM Console features:

  • Bounce VMs without logging into vCenter or vSphere
  • Use vCenter/vSphere credentials to view a top-down hierarchy of the virtual environment
  • Track the real-time up/down status of VMs from the desktop without logging into VMware apps
  • Take a snapshot of your VM prior to shutdown
  • Search VM names or IP addresses

For comprehensive performance monitoring and management across an entire virtualized environment, IT teams should look to SolarWinds' Orion Network Performance Monitor (NPM). Designed with feedback from SolarWinds' user-community of 50,000+ IT managers, Orion NPM manages the rapid changes in dynamic and virtualized environments and allows IT professionals to simply, and visually, manage networks of all sizes.

Orion NPM highlights:

  • Monitors the performance of virtualized Cisco® Nexus 1000V switches & VMware® servers (vSphere™, ESX and ESXi), and automatically tracks VMs during vMotion™
  • Tracks VM availability and performance metrics, including CPU and memory utilization, disk usage and network bandwidth
  • Monitors key vCenter statistics to ensure that the virtualization environment is running smoothly
  • Automatically discovers, identifies and monitors new virtual machines added to any VMware server
  • Leverages out-of-the-box VM reports and maintains VM performance using built-in alerts to receive instant notification of VM-related issues
