Solarflare and Arista Networks Publish Test Report Demonstrating Low Latency With 10 Gigabit Ethernet

Solarflare Becomes an Arista Host Adapter Technology Partner

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - October 21, 2009) - Solarflare Communications, the leader in high-performance 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) silicon and server adapters, today announced the publication of a test report and a marketing partnership with Arista Networks, the leading vendor of low-latency 10GbE and cloud networking solutions.

The collaboration addresses the growing need for low-latency, high-performance 10GbE switch-to-server solutions for ultra low-latency trading platforms and real-time cloud networking. Testing conducted by Solarflare Communications and Arista shows that microsecond, Infiniband-like latency can be achieved with commercially available 10GbE products. The two companies measured the application performance of TCP/UDP messaging using the Solarflare Solarstorm® SFN4112F 10 Gigabit Server Adapter with Solarflare's OpenOnload™ technology and the Arista 7124S 10 Gigabit Switch. The testing used servers and processors typically found in clusters and data centers today.

The Arista 7124S 10 Gigabit Switch demonstrated mean latency of 560 nanoseconds. With back-to-back servers, the Solarflare SFN4112F Adapter achieved impressive minimum latencies as low as 5 microseconds. Server to switch to server minimum latency was as low as 6 microseconds. The test report is available for download on both the Solarflare and Arista websites:

The SFN4112F is the lowest-latency, lowest-power 10GbE server adapter on the market. When combined with OpenOnload (OOL), the Solarflare adapter can achieve TCP/UDP application latency as low as 5 microseconds, and millions of messages per second. By improving the host CPU efficiency, OOL enables applications to leverage more server resources, resulting in dramatically accelerated application performance without any need to rewrite applications or change the existing Ethernet and TCP/IP infrastructure.

Arista Networks collaborates with host adapter vendors in order to bring the best-of-breed solutions, and to ensure interoperability. "It is vitally important to Arista to find partners whose 10G server adapters deliver low latency while at the same time support standard Ethernet and TCP/UDP protocols. Using the Solarflare server adapter with OOL and our switch, we have seen Infiniband-like low latency with millions of messages being transmitted," said Mansour Karam, director business development at Arista Networks.

Low-latency 10GbE is becoming increasingly important to customers in different industries from investment firms building high-frequency trading networks to companies building cloud networks for real-time traffic. "In many networks today, every microsecond counts," said Bruce Tolley, vice president corporate marketing at Solarflare. "10GbE is the natural building block for next generation, high performance networks and Arista is the perfect partner. Both companies are targeting capital market trading customers and other IT segments that are looking for low-latency solutions."
