Since 2007, the Israeli government has imposed a blockade on the Gaza's civilian population of 1.5 million. 50% of the population of Gaza are children. The blockade might arguably be defined as a siege, which is a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention as it constitutes collective punishment of a civilian population. The impact of this blockade, which might constitute a siege, has been to deprive the civilian population of needed food, shelter, clean water, as well as access to education, medical supplies, and medical care. The results of this have been widespread malnutrition, including widespread children's malnutrition and stunting, and needless deaths as people were denied access to medical care.

Kevin Neish, from Victoria, B.C., was a part of the international flotilla which was attacked, in international waters, by Israeli commandoes in the early morning hours of May 31, 2010.

In the same way that civil rights workers during the 1960s challenged the morality of segregation in the US, and anti-apartheid activists challenged the policies of Apartheid South Africa, the Freedom Flotilla's purpose was to challenge the imprisonment of 1.5 million civilians in an open-air prison with precarious access to food, shelter, and medical care.

Neish witnessed the attack on board the MV Mavi Marmara. In addition to witnessing and speaking out, Neish smuggled out photographs documenting the Israeli army actions.

For information on the kinds of goods that the Israeli state has been denying the civilians of Gaza, under the cover of concern about weapons being sent to Hamas, please see this article by Israeli journalist, Amira Hass:
