Southern Community Bank and Trust Arrives in Greensboro, NC

President Jeff Clark Says Southern Community Excited to Serve "One of the Most Dynamic Cities in the State"; Full Service Financial Center Provides Customers With All of Bank's Services On-Site

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 26, 2006 -- Touting the Gate City as a "thriving market with a bright future," Southern Community Bank and Trust (NASDAQ: SCMF) (NASDAQ: SCMFO) executives today cut the ribbon at their new Full Service Financial Center in Greensboro, NC. The office, located at 1505 Highwoods Boulevard, is fully staffed by counselors representing all the services the bank offers, which means customers will get quick, on-site support for personal, business, mortgage, investment and trust services.

Southern Community's president, Jeff Clark, said the new center is off to a flying start. "The office has been open for a few weeks already, and we've been really pleased with how Greensboro has welcomed us so far. We've either met or exceeded all the goals we set thus far, and we're looking forward to a long, rewarding relationship with the Greensboro community."

Joe DePasquale, Southern Community's Guilford Regional Executive, is excited that the Winston-Salem-based bank has opened an office in a city with such a "strong history of growth and vibrancy. The addition to the Triad community of Fed Ex and Dell are helping to re-energize the market and attract other new companies to the marketplace. We're excited to have this opportunity to serve the Greensboro community."

"We've got an excellent mix of seasoned Southern Community people, and individuals who have had valuable experience at other financial institutions. We're eager to demonstrate our commitment to service and our one-on-one basis of understanding and satisfying customer needs," he said.

DePasquale said Southern Community is already scouting locations for additional branches in the Greensboro area. "The High Point office, which we opened in 2002, was our first footprint in Guilford County, our toe in the water," DePasquale said. "Now we're in ankle deep."

Joining Clark and DePasquale in the ceremonies was Scott Bauer, Southern Community's Chief Executive Officer. Bauer noted that "this office is a big step for us. 2006 will see us expanding the 'Southern Community' to include Raleigh and Mooresville, as well. We are excited about serving the great community of Greensboro."

Now in its tenth year, Southern Community Financial Corporation's common stock and trust preferred securities are listed on the NASDAQ National Market under the trading symbols SCMF and SCMFO, respectively.
