CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 21, 2010) - Spartan Exploration Ltd. ("Spartan" or the "Company") (TSX:SPE), is pleased to announce that production has commenced from the first of three previously announced horizontal Cardium wells (100% WI) drilled on Spartan's Cynthia property in northwest Pembina. Over the first 90 hours of production, the well has produced a total of 2,918 barrels of oil and 1.3 million cubic feet of gas (mmcf). At the end of the 90 hour period, the well was flowing at a calendar day rate of 938 boe/d (94% oil). Production from the remaining two wells is expected to commence on or before mid July, once the upgrades to the Company's central battery are complete.

Spartan is also pleased to announce that it has recently commenced the second phase of its Cardium horizontal drilling program. This phase will see the Company drill another 5 net Cardium horizontal wells in the Pembina area. The first of these wells (46.67% WI) well was recently drilled and rig released by Spartan and is scheduled to be completed later this week.

Barrels of oil equivalent (boe) may be misleading, particularly if used in isolation. A boe conversion ratio of six thousand cubic feet (mcf) of natural gas to one barrel (bbl) of oil is based on an energy conversion method primarily applicable at the burner tip and is not intended to represent a value equivalency at the wellhead. All boe conversions in this press release are derived by converting natural gas to oil in the ratio of six thousand cubic feet of natural gas to one barrel of oil. Certain financial amounts are presented on a per boe basis, such measurements may not be consistent with those used by other companies.
