Speed Bumps Give Motorcyclists a Headache

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 13, 2009) - Speed bumps are motorcyclists' biggest irritation according to a poll of a 1,000 Swinton bike insurance customers.

According to the survey, carried out by Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of Motorcycle insurance, 38% of bikers found low-lying speed bumps to be the greatest annoyance with a further 61% stating that they should be removed from the roads.

The poll also found that 11% of bikers have had to have their motorbike repaired following damage caused by speed bumps.

The biggest annoyances, according to the poll, were:

1. Speed bumps (38%)

2. Bad/inconsiderate drivers (22%)

3. Road works (14%)

4. Tailgaters (11%)

5. Middle lane hoggers (9%)

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bike Insurance said: "Unfortunately speed bumps are here to stay, and although they are disliked by the motoring population, they still remain an effective speed deterrent.

"Bike suspension is more sensitive to speed bumps then car suspension so if a speed bump is hit too quickly, then damage is likely to be caused. Square shaped speed bumps, in particular, can cause bikers problems because catching the edge of one of these bumps can alter a bike's centre of gravity, resulting in a shift of weight distribution and possibly an accident.

"Claiming for these repairs through motorcycle insurance can prove costly in the long run as it will affect a motorist's no claims bonus. We would advise bikers to take extra care when passing over bumps to ensure no permanent damage is caused to their bike."
