On Saturday February 20, Alain Côté, FCA, Chair of the Ordre des comptables agréés du Québec and Daniel McMahon, FCA, President and CEO celebrated the arrival of 500 new CAs during the Permit Presentation ceremony and the Gala de la réussite, which were held at the Palais des congrès de Montréal.

The day was also an opportunity to highlight the success of the 599 candidates who passed the 2009 Uniform Evaluation (UFE), the profession's entrance exam that all Canadian candidates must pass to become chartered accountants.

With over 500 parents and friends in attendance, more than 180 new CAs proudly crossed the stage to receive their permits from Alain Côté, FCA, Chair of the Ordre. The new CAs also received a gift to commemorate their entry to the profession from Daniel McMahon, FCA, President and CEO of the Ordre. In addition, Douglas N. Baker, Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and Chair of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, as well as Emmanuel Dubourg, CA, MNA for Viau and Parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Finance, were on hand to address the new CAs.

"We are very proud to welcome these 500 new CAs to the Ordre. Their success is due in no small part to the academics and training employers who shared their knowledge and passion to help our future CAs complete the process for obtaining the CA designation," explained Alain Côté, FCA, Chair of the Ordre.

Six top candidates from Quebec who earned a place on the UFE Honour Roll of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants were honoured during the Gala de la réussite. Étienne Girardin, who achieved the highest standing on the UFE in Quebec, was awarded the Chartered Accountants of Canada Gold Medal and a $2,500 cash prize.

"Congratulations to all these new CAs. Obtaining the CA designation is the culmination of several years of work, and we know how proud they are to join the ranks of our profession. I would also like to congratulate our six top candidates, who are a credit to Quebec," said Daniel McMahon, FCA, President and CEO of the Ordre.

With a membership of over 17,800 CAs and 1,700 candidates for the practice of the profession, the Ordre des comptables agréés du Québec carries out its primary mission to protect the public by enforcing the most demanding admission criteria and ethical standards.
