Spring Adoption Event Saves the Lives of Nearly 16,000 Pets

PetSmart Charities® Second Chance for Love National Adoption Weekend Was April 30-May 2 in All PetSmart® Stores

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - May 3, 2010) -  Nearly 16,000 pets were given a second chance at love when they went home with their new families during the three-day PetSmart Charities Second Chance for Love National Adoption Weekend. The adoption event was held in all 1,149 PetSmart® stores in the United States and Canada on April 30-May 2, 2010.

Proudly sponsored by Hill's® Science Diet® Brand and PetSmart®, the event was the second national adoption weekend in 2010, and as of press time, had helped 15,963 dogs, cats and small animals find lifelong, loving homes. More than 2,000 shelters and rescue groups across North America participated. The first national adoption event, held in February, resulted in 16,534 pet adoptions.

PetSmart® stores with the highest adoption numbers included Salt Lake City, Utah with 354 adoptions; Albuquerque, N.M. with 156 adoptions; Indianapolis, Ind. with 152 adoptions; St. Catharines, Ontario with 121 adoptions; and Grand Junction, Colo. with 109 adoptions.

About 8 million dogs and cats enter U.S. animal shelters each year and only half find homes, making adoption one very important way to reduce the number of pets who must be put down each year. Nonprofit PetSmart Charities is the largest funder of animal-welfare efforts in North America and a strong advocate for pet adoption.

During the Second Chance for Love National Adoption Weekend, cat and dog adopters received free samples from Hill's Science Diet Brand and PetSmart®. In addition, PetSmart Charities provided increased adoption-reward grants to all participating shelters and rescue agencies; in fact, all agencies received $35 from PetSmart Charities for every pet they placed into a lifelong, loving home between April 26 and May 2.

As the primary sponsor, Hill's® Science Diet® Brand is donating $400,000 to support all four PetSmart Charities' national adoption events this year. Remaining events in 2010 are scheduled for the weekends of September 10-September 12 and November 12-November 14.
