SquareTrade Introduces Warranty With Accidental Damage Protection for iPad

Large iPad Screen Could Be Costly to Replace

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - January 29, 2010) - SquareTrade, the largest independent warranty provider in the world, today announced the first and only extended care plan available for Apple's iPad tablet computing device with protection for drops and spills.

The SquareTrade iPad warranty covers drops, spills and other accidents from handling, in addition to normal mechanical and electrical failures. Like all SquareTrade warranties, the iPad warranty guarantees repair or reimbursement within five days of submitting a claim. Under this program, owners are covered up to the original cost of their iPad device, including the most expensive $829 model.

"We intend to leverage our significant experience protecting the iPhone. The iPhone was so heavily and actively used by consumers that it disproportionately failed from accidental damage and drops and spills," said SquareTrade CEO Steve Abernethy. "A study of over 10,000 iPhones showed that 30% of consumers will have an iPhone failure within 2 years, and many of them will have multiple failures."

"Based on our experience with the iPhone, we expect the iPad to be no different. In fact, with the bigger screen, the constant usage, the high price, and the form factor, we expect consumers will want to protect themselves here as well. Our protection option provides iPad buyers the guarantee they will not be out another $829 when their prized iPad accidentally falls. This plan is about helping consumers take the risk out of buying expensive new technology."

The SquareTrade iPad warranty is available for $119.99 for two years of coverage and $169.99 for three years of coverage. Consumers have up to 30 days to buy coverage online after purchasing their iPad.

In addition to the iPad, SquareTrade offers warranties for all Apple Products including optional accidental damage protection on iPod and iPhone devices.
