St. John's Area July Housing Starts

ST. JOHN'S - Aug. 11) - Urban housing starts increased during the month of July, according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). July's housing starts totaled 216 throughout the St. John's area versus 202 starts in July of 2008. Year-to-date, local urban housing starts total 875 compared to 830 during the same period last year.

"The local residential construction sector has performed very well this year, driven primarily by solid single-detached housing starts activity," said Chris Janes, senior market analyst with CMHC in Newfoundland and Labrador. "Employment, income and population growth continue to fuel new home construction in 2009," added Janes.

For Canada's urban centres, total housing starts fell 32 per cent with 10,570 recorded in July compared to 15,456 during July of 2008. Single-detached starts decreased 28 per cent to 5,465, while multiple starts of 5,105 represent a 35 per cent decline from a year ago. Throughout Atlantic Canada, there were 858 urban housing starts posted versus 1,144 the previous July, a decline of 25 per cent.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable, and affordable homes - homes that will continue to create vibrant and healthy communities and cities across the country.
