Staff Morale Tops Union Concerns as Children's Aid Society Contract Talks Resume

NORTH BAY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2009) - Deteriorating staff morale is a top concern for CUPE Local 2049 negotiators as they head back to the bargaining table with the area Children's Aid Society at 10:00 am Thursday, September 10.

"These workers want to move forward and get a contract that will help them to help the children and families they support," said CUPE Negotiator Fran Ludwick, "but that's only going to happen when CAS local management realizes the pressures hurting the agency don't come from workers but are due to a lack of material support from the provincial government."

"Growing morale problems compounded when the Ministry flatlined CAS budgets and local management responded to that by making our working lives more and more difficult," says Local union president Christine Allard. "We used to have maybe 1 or 2 grievances a year at most, now we've got more than 20 a year."

CUPE says they see bargaining as an opportunity to resolve local concerns and let both parties concentrate on working together to get support from the province.

CUPE Local 2049 represents 130 front line staff at the Nipissing & Parry Sound Children's Aid Society in North Bay, Parry Sound, and Burk's Falls. CUPE and the Nipissing & Parry Sound Children's Aid Society started negotiating May 2009.
