Starbak Deployed by Auburn University to Record and Stream Lectures
Harrison School of Pharmacy Offers On-Demand Recordings as Study Aid to Students
NEWTON, MA--(Marketwire - January 23, 2008) - Starbak, the leading provider of enterprise
video networks and portals for the Education, Corporate, Healthcare and
Government markets, announced today that Auburn University's Harrison
School of Pharmacy has deployed a Starbak video portal and integrated
network to provide students with live and on-demand video streams of
classroom lectures.
Auburn University began providing students with on-demand video streaming
of classroom lectures using the Starbak system over a year ago.
Originally, one of the applications for streaming was to ensure that
students with an excused absence or medical leave did not fall behind due
to missed lectures. However, it quickly became apparent that streaming
provided an enhancement, rather than a substitute, for live lecture.
Faculty and administration at the Harrison School of Pharmacy soon embraced
full access to the system. The Starbak system is now being reviewed for
use by other graduate programs at the University.
"When we first explored giving our students access to recorded lectures,
many faculty members were concerned that this might precipitate a drop in
live lecture participation," said Lee Evans, Dean of Harrison School of
Pharmacy. "However, our own data shows that attendance was not affected.
We are also seeing students' grades remain the same or slightly better as a
result of having lectures available on-demand, which is an added benefit."
"The use of Starbak at Harrison School of Pharmacy demonstrates the power
of video in enhancing classroom learning," said Gregory Casale, Starbak's
chief executive officer. "When students can supplement their class notes
with the ability to review recorded lectures at their own pace, they have
been shown to perform better and be more engaged in the educational
process. The use of Starbak at Auburn University's Harrison School of
Pharmacy is a success story that should serve as a model for how to use
video to enhance classroom learning at all educational levels."
